Dobsonian telescopes are specially designed for purely visual observation. The rotation of the night sky ensures that, once aligned, observation objects gradually move out of the field of view. Therefore, Dobsonian telescopes must be constantly tracked by hand. The EQ platform takes over this tracking in the so-called hour axis.

A retrospective purchase of such a platform is usually unproblematic, as the Dobsonian telescope is simply placed onto the platform. So installation work on the Dobsonian is unnecessary.

Such motorised tracking is particularly convenient when several observers are looking through the telescope, for example for public viewing.
